through the window

Working in my study, I am interrupted by one of the chickens standing on the sill and banging on the window with its beak.

I’m reminded of this Lenten poem by the American Benedictine Vicki Ix:

Lenten Silence reigns supreme,

heavy with expectation-

desirous of the ripened fruit

ardent listening might bring.

Birds ignore our little ascetisms

singing still their song of joy-

the unabashed alleluia

of a creation already redeemed.

The chicken reminds me too, beyond the window, of Libya and Bahrain in the foment of revolution and war, of Japan after earthquake, tsunami and nuclear peril, of austerity and cuts here.  The Lenten task of preparing for fullness of life.
