Love the quote, which I believe came from Iranaeus. This was a favorite of the late William Sloane Coffin, a minister and progressive activists here in the United States, though he always used the expression a little differently: “The glory of God a a human being fully alive.” I prefer this reading because it seems to be a call to the individual.

Thanks George. It is Irenaeus. The full quote is:

“The glory of God is man fully alive, and the life of man is the vision of God. If the revelation of God through creation already brings life to all living beings on the earth, how much more will the manifestation of the Father by the Word bring life to those who see God” (AH IV, 20, 7).

I’m not a Greek expert, but I assume it is legitimate to translate ‘man’ as ‘person’ or ‘human being’ here.

As we are social beings, I am always taken by the social potentials of this: a community or parish fully alive.
