A human being has so many skins inside, covering the depths of the heart.  We know so many things, but we don’t know ourselves.  Why, thirty or forty skins or hides, as thick and hard as an ox’s or bear’s, cover the soul!  Go into your own ground and learn to know yourself there.

– Meister Eckhart

The wisdom of Meister Eckhart is just as relevant today as it was in the 13th century. Yes, it is only in the ground of one’s being, far below the myriad “skins and hides,” that we discover who we are and what we are made for.

On this Thanksgiving Day in America, I am reminded of one of my favorite Eckhart quotes: “If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.”

Thanks George, really looking forward to some deep reading of Eckhart when I get time

The false self has so many ways of protecting itself against the journey inward. There is a constant need (for me at least) for prayer for the utter vulnerabilty of the armour of light.
