two saints way – report

This is a rather late route report on the first couple of days of the Two Saints Way.

This is a newly re-established pilgrim route running between Lichfield and Chester.  It has been well way marked and there is an excellent website here detailing the route and giving an increasingly good reference library on pilgrimage.  The route links the shrines of St Chad and St Werburgh.

Mark and I set off in the first touches of autumn, beginning at St Chad’s Well where we were able to have a moment of silent prayer and bless ourselves.

Walking to Lichfield Cathedral we bumped into my friend Nigel working in solitary peace by Stowe Pool.  We prayed at the site of St Chad’s Shrine in the Cathedral

We were soon out of the city and made our way to Cannock Chase and were into enjoyable walking through mixed forest and moor.  It was one of those times when finding accommodation was difficult, so we climbed off the Chase down into the Trent Valley for an excellent bed and breakfast in Maevsyn Ridware.

The next day took us back through the potato field and onto the Chase before climbing off it to head for Stafford.  The River Sow was in spate so we avoided the flooding by walking along a canal and then road.  We walked past the ancient pilgrim hospital of St Thomas reminding me of my uncompleted pilgrimage to Canterbury

We only had a couple of days, but really enjoyed it.  Time has been set aside to finish next year and perhaps extend the route to Holywell.  The rucksack is waiting
